This book tells the story of a young boy named Jamie. Jamie's mother is in an abusive relationship at the beginning of the book. However, she decided to leave her boyfriend because of the way he had handled their daughter. She now has to find a new place to live and manage to get food on the table. Her friend Earl provides them with food. Jamie finds happiness in magic. Throughout the book Jamie enjoys doing magic tricks. His mother does a great job of turning everything around. This book basically tells about the every day struggles of a single mom. This book would help students who have a single parent or have been introduced to domestic violence. It is also a good way to show the struggles some people face
